Has anybody ever been to one of these? I'd like to know how it is, how hard it is to make, the coursework, recreation, etc, etc.
I'm seriously considering the design one, especially since (all of them) are free. I'd love to spend a summer doing design stuff, and my parents can't/won't pay thousands to spend on some random college program.
Yet it seems too good to be true - is there some catch that I simply haven't seen?

Summer Science Program 2016
I haven't found any official threads for SSP 2016 yet, just a bunch of scattered threads about specific parts, so I thought it'd be nice to start one. I'm applying this year, so I personally don't have much advice to give, but I have a lot of questions about the application, so hopefully we can start talking about it all in one place!
So first of all, with my questions:
How should the essays be structured (as in, how formal should they be)? Also, do we need to reach the word limit on each one? Lastly, does SSP superscore the SAT?
Link for those unfamiliar with the program: http://www.summerscience.org/home/index.php
The deadline is Feb. 5 for international apps and Mar. 4 for domestic apps.

Faxing in my own recommendation letters?
I'm applying for a summer program (An Astronomy camp in Alfred) and I'm not sure how to submit my recommendation letters. I was required to have two, and I have both of them in hard copy. I could mail them, but if I do they wont get there by the application deadline. Or I could fax them, but that would mean opening the letters, which, while it doesn't say anything on the website against reading them, a lot of programs highly restrict students possessing their own letters. I tried emailing/calling the summer admission office, but they're not open on the weekend. Advice? :(

PROMYS or SUMAC?
Which one should I go to? PROMYS or SUMaC Program I? I know that PROMYS is cheaper and longer, and much more intense, while SUMaC seems to be more oriented on higher math. Can any previous campers give their experiences on either of these two camps? Also, I already know a lot of abstract algebra, including group theory. Will Program I still be a challenge for me?

Hey guys, is there anyone who can give me some feedback about HCSSiM, and also give me a rough idea of how competitive and beneficial it is? Also, is anyone here going to HCSSiM? Feel free to discuss relating to HCSSiM 2016 on this thread.

Which college choice would look better for NSA internship?
I'm debating whether to go to UMD College Park or a small school in Indiana to major in Computer Science (Taylor University). I'm leaning towards a small school in Indiana for personal reasons (I think making friends would be easier there), and they seem to have a strong Comp Sci program (Taylor grads have gone to work at Google, Lockheed Martin, Motorola, etc.), but UMD is #15 in the country for Computer Science. Would going to the small school lessen my chances of getting an internship at the NSA? Working at the NSA has been my dream and I would give anything to work there.

SSTP Iowa 2016
Greetings!
I'm here for any questions regarding the SSTP program at U of Iowa. I was in it 2 years ago, and some of my best memories are from it, and it's also opened many, many doors for me.
What type of research do you do? You will be assigned a lab based on your application essay and interests. They range from engineering and physics to medicine and chem/bio/neuro research.
What do you do outside of the 8hr lab day? Explore Iowa City, hang out with the other interns, do whatever crazy fun things
Where are the SSTP-Iowa alumni now? Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Stanford, MIT, Columbia, Duke, UChic, UPenn, Northwestern, Brown, Cal, 7-year MD programs, etc.
Is there anything in Iowa? There was not a single moment during the program I felt bored. We were either having a good time in the lab, or having a good time with the other interns.

Medill Cherubs
Hi everyone! I'm currently a junior and I really want to apply to Northwestern's Medill Cherubs summer program. The problem is that I basically have no past journalism experience, and from what I saw on the website, they're looking for people who have strong backgrounds (especially in the application where they state that they strongly recommend samples of articles from high school newspapers). My school doesn't have a newspaper (although my friend and I are going to start one next year) and our yearbook class is basically a slacker class. I have decent grades, and I've taken 5 AP classes so far and I'm currently taking 6. My SAT scores won't be available for another week (I had to take the February makeup lol) and I think I did decently on it. To anyone who's attended there before, were there students who had no past experiences like me? Is it worth giving it a shot?
Thanks!

Which Math Summer Program? Mathroots vs. HSMC
Hello,
I am a freshman in high school who is "good" at math (i.e. 760 PSAT Math, 800 Math 1, 800 Math 2, 109.5 AMC 10) and got into both the Honors Summer Math Camp at Texas State and Mathroots at MIT. I was wondering which math program to choose to do over the summer. I acknowledge that Mathroots is way shorter than HSMC (2 weeks vs 6 weeks) and Mathroots is free while HSMC is 3.3k, but I would like to know which program would be better to attend. If I were to go to Mathroots, I would have more time (and money!) to do some AoPS classes and studying to hopefully get USAJMO and USNCO high honors next year. I was wondering if the cost difference is worth going to HSMC for (aka will it pay off in terms of competition scores and content covered). Which program pay off more in becoming a better mathematician once time and money are taken into account? (And it wouldn't help to know which one would count more towards college admissions).
Or maybe I could kick it and just watch Netflix.

Honors program or exchange trip?
Hi--so basically, I can either apply to attend my state's summer honors program or apply to go on a language exchange trip to Germany. Because of the timeline, I can only choose to apply for one of the two. I'll be eligible to apply for both of them in my junior year as well as for next year (my sophomore year). I don't know which I should do, though! The honors program would likely be more competive and "academic", but a lot of my friends are going on the exchange trip and I feel like it would be a missed opportunity to travel with a lot of friends. Also, I would apply for the honors program in the field of language, so perhaps going on the exchange trip first would strengthen my application? But for both there is a chance I wouldn't get it (honors program b/c it's selective, exchange b/c they have to find a student "match" for me). What would you recommend I apply for? Thank you !!

GenCyber Summer Camps?
Anyone know anything about these? They seem legit; no cost to the participant and funded entirely by the NSA and NSF.. Any news for these camps in 2016? This wouldn't be the reason I would attend, but how would they look from a college admissions standpoint?

EuroSPARC 2016
Has anyone applied to EuroSPARC or SPARC? It seems like a comprehensive and intensive program that appeals to maths-based people. This is the first year they are running this program, so I don't know a lot about it. But, from what I've heard about SPARC, I am sure EuroSPARC will be equally hard to get into. Here's the link if anyone is interested: http://rationality.org/eurosparc/

Clark Scholars vs. TASP
Hello everyone,
I would really appreciate any advice or thoughts you may have! I am having difficulty choosing between these two programs, and I must decide by today!
I am majoring in Neuroscience/Creative Writing, hopefully at a top school with lots of learning opportunities (I think I can be happy anywhere, honestly). (I also have the usual list of AP classes, decent test scores, and fun extracurriculars, like STEM Club, Academic Club, NHS, Scouts, service hours, etc.) For college applications, which one would be "better" in regards to the overall portrait of me?
Clark Scholars: 7 weeks, Texas Tech University, independent science research, stipend of $750 with free housing/food, group of 12 people (one building), potential to submit to competitions, only pay for own transportation. (Key points: independent; ties into my planned major, hands-on experience; close bonds b/c 12 people; networking; but how do people regard this on CC?)
TASP: 6 weeks, UMichigan (for mine), humanities with seminars/discussions/readings, possible stipends for transportation (will apply), free housing/food, budget for other activities, group of 14-16 people (32 in one building due to two groups), learning/speaking experience, possibly don't have to pay anything. (Key points: I need to work on my speaking/interpersonal skills, haha; strong bonds among fellow people; networking; also, everyone seems so excited about this program on CC!)
Thank you so much, I have fallen in love with both programs and I have to choose (and free open a space for someone, haha)! Is there a way to "rank" these programs?
