Hey all. I thought that I would start up a SVSM thread for 2016. If you are an applicant, you can find your status online or should be a getting a letter in the mail within the next few days if you haven't already.

Michigan Math and Science Scholars

I just got accepted into this program at university of Michigan for the summer and I was just wondering if there is anyone who has been there before and could answer some of my questions. Do a lot of people go on the cedar point and baseball trips? And are they worth it? Is there any items I should bring that aren't necessarily on the packing list or are there any things I should be sure to bring? We're the classes hard? I'm in one about statistics and how they are used in stuff. Sounds interesting, but I'm concerned that it won't be very interactive. Are the classes, even the math classes, engaging? Are the counseled lenient and chill or super uptight? Lastly, was it fun? If anyone could answer these I would greatly appreciate it!

Summer Internships/Programs with Late Deadlines

Hey! I'm currently a rising senior that is completely desperate for some kind of internship/program this summer. I got rejected from TASP earlier this year and have gotten nowhere good so far. Anybody have any suggestions for internship/programs that 1) don't cost too much money (Free is even better!) and 2) provides boarding or is around the DC area? Any internships related to humanities or science is appreciated. Thanks!

LBW vs M&TSI vs Launch

Hi guys! I've been accepted to LBW (uPenn), M&TSI (uPenn), and Launch (MIT). MIT Launch's summer program is for the month of June while LBW and M&TSI overlap during the month of July. I could potentially do two programs. Launch in June, one of the other in July. I am for sure going to do either LBW or M&TSI. The question is- which one?? Ah!! Also, should I do Launch as well? By entering Launch, I sacrifice a possibility of an internship & tennis (I am ranked high in my state so tennis is very important!!). I may be able to contact the MIT Tennis dep. (Division 3) and possibly play tennis on the campus while I'm there. I know Launch is an amazing opportunity for any entrepreneur. A once-in-a-lifetime thing. On one hand, I could potentially learn an immense about business. This experience could really shape my life. But on the other, it might repeat information from the other camps and/or not be very beneficial, as I have already created 3 startups that were moderately successful. I would also arrive 1-2 days late (ACT & school) and leave 1-2 days early for Launch (not good!!). LBW (Leadership in the Business World) is a non-credit program and accepts 160 people internationally (80 people at each location). I chose Philly over San Fran when I first applied. I think LBW is more relaxed compared to M&TSI - LBW has more field trips, group projects, and lectures form what I've heard. Yes, I really want to tone my leadership skills, but I don't know if M&TSI is a better experience for me. M&TSI (Management & Technology Summer Institute) is for-credit program and accepts 50 people internationally. I heard there is a huge gender disparity here (like 6 girls, 54 guys - I'm a girl). Since it is for credit, we'll have a lot more work with assignments, labs, quizzes and all. They also host lectures/seminars daily and a couple field trips. I think this would mostly feel like taking an actual college class, which would be very helpful. We also work closely with uPenn staff! This program has a lot to do with engineering as with computer science and business. My interests and hobbies all revolve around computer science & also business, but I am a total noob when it comes to engineering. I just don't want to be overly stressed out if I decide to go there :O Let me know your thoughts!! Also, if you're an alumni, I'd love to hear your experience at any of these summer programs. Aha I shouldn't be stressing out - this is a good problem to have - but I really need some input on this. Thanks!

Musical Theater program

My D is a Junior at a Performing Arts HS. She is a strong dancer since she was 3 in all areas but loves and shines in Mth. She has a great voice, vocal training (3 years) and had some acting lessons as well. She has done two musicals (ensemble parts) and just got her first job ever - community theater Memphis ensemble (youngest person in cast). Her dream is definitely Broadway. She has auditioned for several SI - Broadway Theater Project (accepted), Broadway Triple Threat (accepted), Jacobs Pillow, AMDA, Pace, BOCO and BUSTI. She has a 2 objectives for her summer: 1) The best training possible to strengthen her acting and singing to make her competitive in the Triple Threat arena - (I'm thinking BUSTI). 2) Get a feel/rule out a college she is considering/conservatory vs univ. Although BOCO seems to match - it seems that this and many MTh programs will focus on your strength which is great but doesn't give her the training in areas that she needs to be competitive in upcoming auditions. Thoughts or opinions are GREATLY appreciated!!

Hey guys, Anyone get accepted to this program for this summer? I haven't seen any discussions about it so I wanted to put one up. Any out-of-states that will be in the dorms? Any past participants that want to chime in?

Has anyone done this program? How does it compare to the other math ones in terms of overall experience? What math were you in the year before you got accepted? I'm in Algebra 2 currently, however I have pretty good scores on math competitions and would have done precalc concurrently if it weren't for my schedule. How is the overall experience, especially for girls?

Beginners journalism/creative writing

Hi, I was researching some summer programs regarding journalism and creative writing. I attended Duke's Youth Summer Program, which was the best experience! I looked at University Of Iowa's yearbook camp, and I also looked at Cornell's. I am planning on attending Point Park's screenwriting camp. I also came across Princeton's. Could someone tell me about Princeton's journalism? Is it leaned more toward low-income families? Could you share some other camps as well? Thanks

Hi everyone, I am seriously considering spending a week at Brown this summer, but I am so worried I won't be able to make friends because I am staying for such a short time. What do you guys think? Also I was wondering... how's the atmosphere there? Is it really competitive? Is it worth the money? Thank you :))

Summer Program Conundrum

So my twin sister and I both applied for this summer research internship at a prestigious out of state university, as part of a program. My sister got in, but I did not. Should I ask the professor for a position as well? It would be very problematic and inconvenient for us to be separated during the summer, and it interferes with a lot of family stuff. How should I go about approaching the professor about the possibility of giving me a position?

Hi all, I applied to ISSYP (International Summer School for Young Physicists) this year, and I'm eagerly awaiting April 29, when we find out who has been accepted into ISSYP. Is there anyone else on CC who's applied to ISSYP this year or attended it in recent years? If so, I thought it'd be fun to get to know each other!

How to ask for summer research / internship at local university, engineering firm, etc.?

Hey guys! So I've never done this sort of thing before, so I'm not sure how it works. I've been looking for productive ways to spend my sophomore-junior year summer and have found that getting research and hands-on experience can help me get employment or internships later on in college, all while enriching my college application. I'm a prospective EECS major, although I'm also interested in physical sciences and environmental or mechanical engineering. I'm a resident of California and live close to a few junior colleges and universities, including a lower-tier UC. I also know of a couple engineering firms near my area. So comes the question, how exactly do I ask for a research spot or an internship spot at one of these places, in a manner that doesn't get my email deleted right away? I have a few specific questions: 1. Are requests such as these from high school students common? Are these requests usually accepted or denied? (I've heard of a few kids before me who sent out emails and snagged their own research spot at a local UC) 2. What's the correct way to ask for one? Do I email the faculty directly, etc.? 3. What do I put in my request? High school transcripts, letter of recommendations, standardized test scores and the like? Do I send these right away or as a follow up, or even not at all? 4. Are these sort of experiences good on college admissions? Do they display depth in a field, initiative or the like? 5. Does it help if I have connections to people? (If I know someone personally at a medical center, for example, that conduct research) Thanks for answering my questions!

Stanford Unpaid Internships

Hi Everybody, Stanford provides a guide for high school students to find an internship at a Stanford lab. You do this on an informal basis, by emailing professors. I am wondering: how hard is it to find a professor who is willing to accept high school students for the summer? Can anyone give me any tips, and what should I do to boost my chances. Thanks

Hi! Recently, as a sophomore in high school, I applied to HCSSiM. I was wondering how long it takes for the program to get back to you on whether or not you are accepted, and what the acceptance rate is? Also, could someone who got into the program share their stats? Thank you!
