NJ Scholars Program 2016

I haven´t been able to find any discussion on the NJ Scholar Program for this year, so I am starting one. I recently received my semifinalist letter, so I was wondering if anyone has any tips for the interview? I looked at the discussions for the previous years, but only a few posts actually mentioned the specific topic they were given during their interview. For any alumni out there, what were some of the interview topics?

Anyone got the result emails yet? Their website said March 25th, but it's way past that day. Judging from last year, the notifications will be emailed in a week or so. Any idea?

FREE/Excellent Scholarship Summer Programs

I think we should sticky a list of completely free programs. Free can mean everything but airfare, or can mean airfare included. There are just way too many pages of random programs that are free or might be low-cost due to some catch and it's just too complicated to any newcomers here. So can we start a thread with NOTHING but free programs, or programs with excellent financial aid? We can also follow a format like: <for what> <free financial aid> <where> <link> Carleton Liberal Arts Experience Introducing African-Americans and people of African descent to the strengths of a liberal arts education. Free (Airfare included) Carleton College Carleton College: Carleton Liberal Arts Experience: About the Program</where></free></for>

There have been a few threads about this, but there aren't very many replies from people who have gone to this program. I was accepted but still debating on whether or not I should go. So far most of the reviews seem pretty positive. I'd really like it if anyone who has gone could tell me about it. Is it worth it? What is a typical day like? How was the overall experience like? What do you do besides go to class and labs? Thanks for any feedback!

Hi all, I received today my acceptance email to the Georgetown Summer High School program and I plan to attend the one-week Medical Institute or the three-week Medical Immersion should I be lucky enough to get off the waitlist. I created this thread as a gathering place for anyone who is attending an institute or immersion program at Georgetown during the Summer of 2016. Please post your questions here and again congratulations on your acceptances! I can't for this summer!

Programs and awards to apply to senior year

So I'm going to be a senior and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for awards or programs or conferences to apply to. I'm looking for stuff like awards like NCWIT along with more typical prestigious ones. For programs/conferences, I'm trying to find stuff like ANNpower Vital Voices or Texas Tech LEAD or She++ Summit, though they don't necessarily have to be in the summer. The only catch is that I can't afford anything except MAYBE travel which is why for programs and conferences, they basically have to be free and pay for me to visit. My friend applied to some tech conference scholarships last year (she's a current senior) and they paid all her expenses and honestly, I'd love nothing more than to be able to do that so if you know of any please tell me!!! (The deadlines for the ones she went to already passed...) About me and stuff: I'm a rising senior, girl, not financial aid but still unable to pay, really into tech, and good with graphic design. I'll probably end up going into a tech-related field like computer science or cybersecurity though my experience is actually focused on communication and graphic design type of fields. Grades wise, I'm in the top ten of my class and currently an IB Diploma Candidate and though I'm nothing super amazing academically, I've got a lot of EC's and leadership positions which are a plus. Just looking for things besides JUST scholarships. All recommendations are appreciated and hopefully others looking for the same time of activities will see these too cause I got a couple of things junior year and yes, scholarships are a must, but actual experience and same-interest communities are also amazing and 10/10 would totally recommend. Thanks!

I thought I'd have something to do this summer, but I've been rejected from almost 10 programs and only have Girls State to go to, which is a week long. So, any programs left, preferably STEM focused? Either residential or commuter in Chicago.

Best rigorous/inexpensive summer programs for theatre students?

**HELP REALLY NEEDED*!!!!!!!! If someone could take the time to help me it would save my summer or even maybe my whole career! Thank you!! Hello, I've been looking all over this website all year for information on different summer programs to apply to! It's been insanely helpful! Now that lots of summer programs deadlines are really soon I really really need any info anyone has. The hard part is it's extremely difficult to judge for me which programs are best. I live basically in the middle of nowhere with not even an acting class (even a bad one!) within two hours of me. I've known I wanted to perform for the rest of my life since I was about 11, and I've especially gotten interested in acting, even though musical theatre is definitely my passion as well. I am dying to be a professional actor right now, but unless we move (which I highly doubt would happen), it is absolutely impossible. It's really pretty soul crushing to want this so much I feel like I'm just exploding all the time, while I know lots of kids with half my passion have been getting weekly lessons and are being in sitcoms and things. Regardless, I've had lots of health problems the last few years so I couldn't participate in any summer intensives until FINALLY this year I can! I'm a current sophomore, rising junior, and 16 - which seems to be pretty versatile because a lot of programs maximums and minimum ages are 16! It can't be more than 3/4 weeks though, and my parents said it couldn't be more than $2000. Which I know is pretty ridiculous as far as summer programs go, but I don't have time to have a job so I'm not really sure what I could do about that. We don't qualify for any scholarships I've looked at. I think as long as its not more then $3000ish that could work as long as its a really great program. Since no one in my town even remotely cares about performing let alone rigorous technique, I have no one to ask about summer programs! I feel like I really need more information. I've been searching up every program that exists, but I really would like maybe some direction. I am primarily involved in musical theatre, but have recently gotten much more interested in acting (specifically on camera, which I have never done and have absolutely NO experience in and I would love), and I really want to learn everything I can about Meisner, as well as comedy. The main point is I really need technique and training, so less performance-based overall and DEFINITELY not at all juvenile. I'm fine with a 16+ program, but often they don't supply boarding because most of the people there are full adults. That's been a problem because I definitely need boarding as there's no summer programs I've found that I could drive to every day. Plus I would love to engage with actors my own age I've never really done that before! But it cannot be juvenile and watered down I want it to be intense and I want so much to learn every single thing I can! A program that an average aspiring teen actor might think is too full/intense! And of course they have to still be accepting applications. I've found a ton of programs I love but whose application fee is nearly $500! That is of course impossible unless I knew that was the only program I would want to go to, and I don't think I can do that for any program since I can't tell which would be best for me! I REALLY REALLY NEED UNBIASED REVIEWS OF THESE PROGRAMS based on how desperately I need training if you could! Here are the programs I'm considering but really would need to speak to someone who actually attended it/has information about it given how much I really need this training (especially focused on acting OR possibly improving not so good singing technique-wise) - Wagner SMTI (applied, but it is not focused on acting) - Interlochen (applied for waitlist, but it is not focused on acting) - AMDA (I hear such mixed reviews about their summer program. Really - how is it? Is it rigorous or more laid back? Are you taught real technique? I'm getting the sense the students aren't but then again my drama teacher highly recommended it! Not the school but the SUMMER program. And is the ACTING summer program good? Or should I apply for voice but concentrated in musical theatre? - AADA (American Academy of Dramatic Arts) - (I REALLY like this based on the info I've heard, but I haven't heard hardly anything! The youth program goes UP to 16, like it's the maximum age. So I can't help but think the youth program would be very juvenile. But it really does look amazing. The adult summer programs go up FROM 16, no age limit. That sounds more rigorous to me I'm assuming, but I don't know if it would be weird for me to be in a class with mostly people that might be my parents age, I mean since the classes last all day for weeks. Plus I don't think they bring you things like food, and I wouldn't have access to a car. PLUS on the website it says there is boarding but I contacted them and they said there is no boarding - which sounds strange since they say most students come from all over - and that I need a parent with me - which I think would be impossible since the program is four weeks.) - Broadway Artist Alliance (about to apply) - (This looks really great for musical theatre training, and they CAN provide board which is good, and it's about the only one in my price range, but again I really really do need just acting training especially in Meisner!) - UCLA - (This sounds good but I have absolutely NO information on the actual training so I'm not sure what to do, I can't even find that much about the school itself!) - Triple Threat Boston Conservatory (I have NO information on it but it sounds good, but I'd rather be in a larger city plus it's not completely focused on acting) - TPAP (The Performing Arts Project) - (I've heard lots of great things about this.) - Young Actors Camp - (Their description sounds amazing but I've also heard once that it was a scam? I just really need training it sounds great but it has to be professional and not very juvenil.) I've looked up but have no reliable info anywhere on: the Relativity School, Broadway Dreams Foundation (quality training?), the Actors Space West, Maggie Flanigan Studio, and more. Here are the programs I absolutely loved but have an insanely high application fee so I could only apply if they were my only option which is unlikely: - SOCAPA (I really really love how this sounds, but I just don't have any info on how rigorous it is. Plus there's a non refundable $500 fee so I'm not sure what to do) - UNCSA (This program looks like exactly what I want, it just looks insanely amazing, but again there is a several hundred dollar application so this would have to be my one shot, and I'd rather be on one of the coasts, plus two teacher recommendations which I don't know where I could get from because I currently have no teachers or old ones that I could contact. It's possible, just a bit messy.) - Northwestern Acting on Film (I LOVE the sound of these programs, but it has a pretty expensive application fee and getting a teacher recommendation would be very complicated for me - plus I haven't heard that much about THIS specific program, it's not just the general acting program, so even though I love it I just don't know what to do) But I'm really open to any suggestions anyone has given my ramifications! Please please read this I really need help and the clock is ticking down please and thank you so much for taking the time to read this ANY information is welcome thank you!!!

UMass Amherst Research Intensive Summer Internship/Program

Hey fellow CC’ers!!! I want to inform you guys about the Umass Amherst Research Intensive Summer Internship Program (we like to call it AR.SIP-Amherst Research Summer Internship Program). The Umass web page (http://www.umass.edu/summer/precollege.html) covers all of the housekeeping info **the 6 week research intensive program is not the same as the other 1 and 2 weeks programs listed on the website**. This research internship is a 6-week program hosted at Umass Amherst, under the guidance of a mentor, you will research in a lab (biology, biochem, physcology, food science, ecology, neuroscience etc). There are also some afternoon talks that involve profs talking about their research and landing future research opportunities (these are really good). This program does require some work both inside and outside of the lab (ex. reading papers, organizing project, reviewing concepts), but there’s an excellent balance between social life (I will explain plenty more about social life later on in this thread) and lab work. The program culminates with a poster session to your peers, professors, and family. This is an amazing group of nice, passionate, and engaging people whom you will make really good connections with. This program was a really rewarding experience and I learned so much!!! I’m also going to miss everyone I met! I can say without a doubt that this was one of the best summers I’ve ever had!!! Admissions: Even though **** is relatively new, it’s pretty competitive. The application is a bit different from other internship programs, however. Instead of a general application, candidates apply to three different labs of their choice. The professors then view the applications and accept students accordingly. The process is a rolling admissions system so the level of competitiveness really depends on the lab. Each lab generally only accepts up to 2 students. This year approx 30+ applicants were accepted into the program. Most accepted people had really good stats: multiple 800s on science/math subject tests, perfect ACT scores and 2200+ Sat scores, previous research experience, 4.0 GPA’s (projected to be valedictorians), good ec’s (capatin of varsity teams, presidents of clubs, science competitions, lots of community service). The applications isn’t all about stats. Students at the internship are all motivated and well-rounded students. I know some kids who got in with no research experience. These kids in got in through relatively good stats and a real passion for science. Ultimately, you’re being evaluated by a professor who decides if he or she wants you to be in his or her lab for 6 weeks. Most profs have a skype interview before accepting students to get to know you better and determine your eligibility. A few Students get acknowledgements on papers if they are lucky and have gotten a lot done; some do well in competitions. The psych labs do things a bit differently: students write and (have the chance to) publish papers. At the end of the day, it all depends on the mentors and project, which is why it’s important to talk to the professor about what you’ll be potentially doing for six weeks prior to coming to ****. Most students get paired up with a undergrad/grad student and maybe even a Post Doc (although this is rare). The projects really depend on the lab and the types of project the lab is working on. Most labs have really friendly/helpful mentors. Social Life It’s REALLY easy to make friends. The friendships I made during this program were invaluable! Attend a few of the planned social events and you’ll immediately make friends. After spending six weeks with these awesome people (most rising juniors and seniors) you won’t want to leave….By the end of the program everyone established good friendships (some kids even cried when they had to go back home). Even though the campus seems to be in the middle of nowhere, there are a ton of things to do (granted you may have to walk a little or take a short bus ride to get to these places). There is a beautiful nearby pond called Puffers Pond (comes with a beach and waterfall), nearby boba iced tea shop (it was really good tea), restaurants, a mall, laser tag area, cvs, cinema theaters, walmart, target, best buy, name anything and it’s probably nearby The PA’s at the dorms were also really nice and easy to talk to! There were also so many planned events with prizes such as karaoke night, roommate game, scavenger hunt, jeopardy, board games, video game tourneys, watch 4th july fireworks, There were also unplanned evens like nightly horror movies with fellow researchers, kickboxing classes at the rec centers, or just hanging out with friends. the program also hosts an sat class/ college counseling. Some of the facilities include a nearby rec center (free access!!!) with badminton courts, weight rooms, basketball courts, swimming pools etc. (i guess this is expected because i mean Umass is a college campus), also a ton of fields around campus. Most of the people are incredibly talented, nice, and fun to be around! Food I know food may not be a big deal, but at Umass it’s a HUGE deal. The food is unbelievably good. Im pretty sure Princeton Review ranked Umass as #2 for having the best college campus food. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all really good. (In my opinion dinner’s are the best though). Food is gourmet and have an amazing spectrum of foods. The dining commons (there are a few) have sushi bars, asian vietnamese noodle bowl tables, chipotle-type bar, stir fry lines, salad bar, yogurt bar, Italian section, pasta section, Asian section (korean food, etc.) waffle makers, smoothies, desserts (desserts were highlight of my meals, the cakes are a must!!!), and classic English foods like pizza and burgers. Before the program starts you will organize a meal plan for yourself so you can eat at these dining commons, but I’m not going into the specifics of this since you can find out at the website listed at the beginning of this thread. There is also a really good restaurant on campus called Blue Wall that can be a part of the meal plan. FYI dorms are located in the honors college. These dorms are new and really clean. The rooms have two beds, two desks, two cabinets, windows, sheets, and pillows. Demographics (***may change year to year): east asian/indian (1/2) and then white (1/2) Gender ratio was 50/50 Most interns were juniors/rising seniors ( 90%?) A portion were from Massachusetts Almost everyone lived on campus in the dorms together (90%?) this isn’t some small local program either, this program attracted people from around the world and US. kids from taiwan, kansas, california, new york, Texas, new hampshire and from massachusetts. some of these kids came from EXTREMELY competitive high schools ex.phillips academy andover (#1 boarding school in the United States, about 33% of graduating class every year accepted to ivy leagues, stanford, mit, uchig, duke, georgetown, etc), lexington high (extremely competitive public high school in MA multiple simr winners from this school) palo alto high school ( extremely good public high school in Cali, some people say this high school is harder than stanford), Please bump if you can, and if other people who were in this program can contribute to this thread telling about their lab, experiences, advice, favorite moments, etc., that would be much appreciated!!! :)
