Political science summer programs

I was nominated for Girls State and was really excited about potentially going but I was chosen as the alternate :(. I'm friends with the girl who is the delegate so I know odds are very very low she will not decide to go, so unless anyone knows some other way to get into GS I feel like I'm out of luck. Are there other summer programs or even ones during the school year that offer experiences like GS that I can apply to? Anything political science related is good but specifically things that simulate the political process like GS, where students do elections and legislating/work to create a mock-government? I've looked into NSLC but I don't know if I can make the dates for it. It sucks to be so close but so far from an experience that I feel would be so relevant to what I'm interested in.

Princeton Undergraduate Summer Program Discussion!

Hi everyone, don't know if anyone else is in the same boat but I'm a current undergraduate student and I recently applied for the Princeton Neuroscience Institute Summer Internship Program and Molecular and Computational Biology Program. I would love to know if anyone else has had previous experience with Princeton undergraduate Summer programs and if we could start a discussion about it. Just for clarity, I haven't received a decision yet, but will update when I do. Also, sorry if this is a little bit irrelevant, I couldn't decide if I should put this thread in the Princeton University section or here.

High School Diplomats 2019

Hi! I didn't see a forum for HSD 2019 yet, so I decided to make one. "High School Diplomats (HSD) is a scholarship program that brings together high school students from the United States and Japan each summer through two parallel experiences. HSD U.S. provides the opportunity for American and Japanese students to meet at Princeton University for ten days of cultural exchange. HSD Japan allows American students who have successfully completed HSD U.S. to apply for a full scholarship to travel to Japan for a month the following summer."

Has anyone heard of or been apart of the USC Bovard Scholars Program? It seems like a great opportunity but I can't find any information on how difficult is to be accepted, and I'd also love to hear about past experiences. Thanks! (Not sure if this is the right forum, but it has a three-week summer program aspect? Wasn't sure where else to post)

Summer Science Programs v.s. Local Research?

I had wanted to apply to research programs like Garcia and Simmons, but clearly I am late to the game as the deadlines have passed. The other research programs I am looking into that are of "similar tier" (for lack of a better word) seem to favor students from local areas, so I am 1% confident that I will get into any of these programs I am looking at. I am also an ORM from the midwest, so I am not eligible for many of the "underrepresented minorities" programs. Long story short, how important is it that I go to one of these research programs in terms of college apps? I do truly enjoy research and have done research in the past, but is it really worth it to try to find and apply to more of these prestigious programs rather than contact professors at nearby colleges directly? If you have any suggestions as well as any programs I can still apply to (rip it's already towards the end of February), please share :) If you have been in one of these research programs yourself, please let me know what you thought and if it really was worth it. Thank you!

How Writing Grows In a Group

Do you ever write in a group as well as on your own? I tend to be a solitary writer, with the occassional dabble into writing in the company of others for workshops and classes. Spending a week with other writers in Sardinia gave me the chance to experience what happens when you write more regularly as part of a group. (Although I was supporting and facilitating the retreat I also took part in the research paper services as a participant. The reflections below are based on that participant perspective.) Timed Exercises: We did a number of timed writing exercises, 15 minutes at a time. It was fascinating to see just how much we could write in what appeared such a short period of time – and what good quality it was too, even at the first, unedited, cut. I was also aware of the way my mind was starting to adjust to the 15 minute time frame, and anticipate the prompt, the challenge to get it down. Even if I’m doing them on my own in the immediate future, timed exercises are definitely getting added to my regular writing practice list. Reflecting: The dynamics of a small, supportive group meant that we got to know each other’s writing, and the stories, the lives, that lay behind the words. This helped to create the space for thinking and reflecting, for bouncing ideas off other people who were interested in your work and ideas. The act of writing is only part of the process. Working with others who can help you think out loud is invaluable. Experimenting: The combination of timed exercises, intelligent company and challenging prompts proved good for the muse. Those of you following my progress here will be proud to know I dipped my toes gently into the waters of fiction (admittedly just a couple of random contributions to Alina Popescu’s vampire novel, but still, it’s a start ;-) ) and found short poems materialising, day after day. I’ll share one (yes, for the first time) later this week. Reading my work: This was a bit of an eye-opener for me. I really enjoyed reading my work out to a group. I hadn’t realised quite how much until they kindly pointed out how much I was throwing myself into the reading of my work. I think this is partly because of the rhyme and rhythm I enjoy in writing… Whatever it was is, it’s fun :-) More of it: I got so much from the experience of writing and reflecting with a group, I’m definitely going to create opportunities for more of it. Both groups that I can write in and as part of, and opportunities for others… including you, maybe?… to write on your own and together as part of a group. If you’ve written as part of a group before, how did you find it changing your writing? Is it something you’d like to do more of in the future?

I applied to the Literature, Philosophy and culture session of YYGS as an international IB student from Jordan with very good grades (not straight A's though but most my A's are in humanities and language), and did phenomenally in the essays section (Im a very creative & excellent writer). I also wrote a very good financial need-statement and uploaded two evidences of family income. As for my activities I uploaded a lott and one of the major ones(won second place in an international debate competition in India, organizing MUN, internship at health center).

I've already applied to RSI and am planning to apply to a couple more with deadlines in late February and March. I was just wondering if anyone else could recommend some science research summer programs that are open to students all over the US? I'm not a URM or low-income student either. Thanks!!<3

Girls State-- American Legion

My daughter got nominated for this-- I've never heard of it before today. I've read some of the past threads, but does anyone have current experience they can share? I read that the American Legion is non-partisan, but I've also read that it tends to be politically and religiously conservative. Is Girls Camp welcoming to all on the political and religious or not religious spectrum? I think a week of debate and politics sounds amazing, but my daughter would be miserable if it was all one-sided politically. Thank you in advance.

CC vs UC Summer Sessions?

I'm a junior in a Californian high school, and I've decided on taking college classes over the summer to strengthen my applications by showing I can handle rigorous coursework and getting letters of recommendation from my professors. I want to go to a UC for engineering after graduating high school. Now, during the summer between junior and senior year, would it be more beneficial to attend a local community college, which could be cheaper and allow for time for more activities during summer, or take courses with the summer session of the UC's I would like to attend, which, despite being more expensive, may strengthen my application? I can pay for either and have no prior commitments and I'd greatly appreciate it if someone could weigh in on pros and cons regarding cc courses vs summer sessions.

CSSI at Google 2019

CSSI applications for 2019 are out so thought might as well start a new discussion. The questions are pretty vague and I was confused on what to write about. For example, Q5 asks, Say you are trying to upload a photo to share with a photo sharing app. You see a non-specific error message, like "Sorry, something went wrong." List all the ways you can think of to try to fix or work around the error. (200 word max limit) Can someone share their thought process for this question? I don't even know where to start. Are we answering this question from a programmer's point of view or the user's point of view?

Hey, I haven't seen a thread on CC about Google's CSSI program for 2019. I finished my application last week, even though it's a very long shot. I wanted to know if anyone here is applying for it?
