Summer 2019

Hello, I am typing to ask a question on what yall think is best. So for the summer I am quite stumped on what to do. My parents were thinking that I could go to their home country in South America, and volunteer/intern with my aunt's husband since he is a doctor. Would this help on college apps? I really want to do it but not for nothing. Thanks!!

SHAD 2019

Hello people of collegeconfidential! I am currently a grade 12 student in Newfoundland, I very recently had found out about SHAD so I’m a little late with sending an application but when I heard about it for me it became an absolute must to apply for. Just wondering if anyone out there have attended before and if you have I can’t help but wonder what are the actual odds of getting accepted? From what’s I seen while looking around has been that the people who have attended the program seem to be students who got rediculous grades and on top of that have done some pretty amazing things out side of academics... Me as a person am your average/ little above average guy maintaining honour role right through sr high with a 85-90avg and in terms of extra curricular I’m involved with being on a FIRST robotics team, high school ball hockey team, I am a tutor with a school board funded program called tutoring for tuition, I’m a Jr firefighter, in grade 10 I received a school award that is awarded to a student who has undergone great challenges and have fought their way through it and being successful. I missed basically all of jr high because of some medical issues and went back to grade 10 and managed to fight my way through which was the reasoning for the award. I also attended a Tourette’s awareness walk where I raised over C$1000 for Tourette’s syndrome medical research. Any input would be awesome! Thanks

Would Brown's Online Pre-College Program count as an extracurricular? Would it be considered a good or decent extracurricular?

COSMOS 2018

Hi, I'm looking to do COSMOS in 2018, application opens on 1/4/18. I've never done this sort of application, so should I gather my rec letter and transcript before school ends this Friday, or wait until after break? I heard somewhere that the earlier you apply, the better chances you have... Also, what are my chances of getting in with 3.8 GPA weighted?

Fields of Interests?

The summer program I will be attending in the summer wants to know which fields of science/medicine I'd be interested in doing research in. I am not sure how broad or specific a field of interest goes. What would be subcategories under the brain (neurology), the heart (cardiology), and genetics?

Lost junior

I’m a junior in the Bay Area who has absolutely nothing planned for the summer. I don’t have any extracurriculars of note (major club president, research, entrepreneurship, job, etc.), and I was wondering what on Earth I could do that would help me, since I’m feeling a little discouraged after looking through summer program threads. Senior year isn’t that far away, so I don’t want to spend time kicking myself for not being motivated as an underclassman. Here’s what I have going for me: Unweighted GPA: 4.0 (3.97 by UC system) Weighted GPA: 4.32 EC: USABO semifinalist ~50 hours of community service No ACT yet (I’m not taking the SAT) Any recommendations?

Internships / summer programs for HS seniors accepted to college

Hi all! As a graduating HS senior, I've found myself right in a sweet spot for internships: at the bottom of the ladder for collegiate work, but not eligible for most HS summer programs. I have a short list (posted below) of the internships I have found so far, but was wondering if you guys know of any more. CC has always been such a helpful community during college apps, can't believe it took me so long to ask for help with other types of apps! Thanks yall :)

Nonlinear Dynamics Summer Research or Summer Programs?

Hi all, I'm really interested in learning about nonlinear dynamics. I was trying to find summer research opportunities or programs (pre-college) but so far the only thing that has come close is the mathematical modelling of biological systems cluster at COSMOS UCD. Besides this, does anybody have any places where there is a focus on nonlinear dynamics? I'm planning on self-studying calculus (and mayyyyybe nonlinear dynamics, but I heard that this is usually taught to upperclassmen in college,) whether or not I go anywhere this summer anyway. (If it matters, I'm a junior, will be a rising senior this summer.)

Hi everyone, I'm currently applying for this program and read through some of the threads from previous years, but no one really specified what it was they were looking for in written questions. Do they want full-blown essays? I was also wondering if anyone knew how competitive the San Bernadino market was. Any advice as to how to go about the application would be most appreciated. - Sam

Well guys, guess it's this time of the year again. LBW '18er here. After abandoning CC for a good few months I'm back to look through the UPenn ED thread and remembered a year ago when I was desperately browsing CC for LBW info lol, so here I am. If you have any questions about LBW, the application process, the program itself, etc. just reply and I'll answer them the best I can. Best of luck to all of you!! Don't stress too much. Before receiving my acceptance email I was 100% expecting a L but I still got in haha~! So you never know what happens!

SUMaC vs Economics for Leaders

I intend on applying to both of these programs over the summer. I am not sure if I'll get into either one, but they conflict in my preplanned summer schedule. If I do happen to get into both, which one should I pick? Or is it possible to attend EFL and then attend SUMAC late? Btw, I am looking to major in economics in college and I am currently a sophomore in high school. Thank you

Summer before college

Hello, Does anyone know of any good programs to partake in the summer between the final year of high school and beginning of university? I have from late June until mid-October (around 3.5 months) and am not quite sure how to spend my time. I'll spend some time taking trips with family, and intend to complete a few Law/ Finance work experience in London, but would like to take part in some research-oriented opportunities, and also spend some time (without family) abroad (ideally in California) doing something worthwhile. I've found a number of interesting options such as UC Berkley's Summer Session (I'd intend to take an Econometrics class), but the $10,000 it will cost for 6 weeks of tuition, housing, and food, seems excessive. Are such courses (aimed at undergraduates) worthwhile? Are there any other similar opportunities that perhaps don't cost so much? Is it possible to email faculty at universities and ask if I could RA for them? Any other suggestions on summer courses or alternative ways to spend this summer? Thanks a lot.

School of The New York Times

I recently applied and was accepted to the Summer Academy at School of The New York Times (sorry, I know it is not a college). The ~6,000 dollar enrollment fee is obviously hefty for a two-week summer program, so I I want to make sure that attending is the right decision. For those who have done the program in the past—Is it worth it? What can I expect, and what was your experience? Finally, how will this program impact the rest of my life, if at all? As it is I am planning to attend, but I'd like more information and there's little to be found online (not including the official site). For those who are interested, I'd be doing the Creative Writing course. Thanks!

I'm an alum (2018 Cohort B Founder) from the Quarter Zero Catapult Incubator - if anyone has questions regarding the program and my experiences, feel free to ask and I'll try my best to answer! A few pointers and thoughts: -Definitely apply if you want to be part of a real experience - nothing here is "simulated." Everything is quite real, from the idea validation to customer acquisition! -Quarter Zero is willing to hear ideas and applicants of all kinds! It doesn't matter if you just got interested in entrepreneurship or feel like your idea won't generate enough profit - I founded a social venture that is nonprofit, so don't be afraid to bring forth new projects! -The founder/free agent system brings about a unique team formation experience and gives everyone a chance to succeed! Just a few of the many parts of my amazing experience at Quarter Zero. Feel free to post questions and good luck with applications!

Summer Programs that don't require recommendations + venting on the recommendation process

Hi, I am a current junior interested in STEM summer programs - especially Math/CS/Stats oriented programs (did 3 summer programs in last three summers - mostly math ones, now exploring the Applied Math/CS/data-science programs where I can get to do more focussed research). Aware of the usual big names - RSI, Simons, PROMYS etc. - almost all of them require recommendation letters (in a specific format/site) which has become a challenge to get. Exploring any programs that either don't need recommendations or accept generic sealed letters (as opposed to teachers needing to fill up at a specific site). Pls let share such programs in this thread - TIA. Venting on the process: I go to a large public high school - took most challenging courses and doing reasonably well. Teachers have a positive opinion of me and they agreed to give reco letters when I asked them one month ago. But now I applied to couple and realized they never submitted the letters to one of the program despite of my repeated requests/reminders. Finally got a response back from one teacher who said to the effect that he does not have time to fill up all the forms for admission into a summer camp - and if I apply to any more camps, he may not give unless its a copy of sealed letter. I don't think its a unique problem faced by me, most of high school teachers are short of time and give preference to give letters for college admissions. This gives an unfair advantage to private/boarding school students (I heard that some of these schools have dedicated councilors to help juniors for summer programs). Why don't summer programs use more structured college admission type process? - one recommendation shared by multiple programs. its not like my math teacher is going to write something drastically different for one program to another. OR alternately they could ask for recommendations only after short-listing based on any other criteria (surprised to see that even the math programs that have a admission quiz ask for recommendations). Anyway just venting that most of these programs seems to have already self selected to prefer certain high school students over others despite of claims that there is no such preference. There is no alternative for me other than just requesting the teacher and limiting myself to 2 or 3 camps and hope for the best - but if there are good camps without this hassle please do share here. thanks for listening.

Hi! Anyone know if this program is worth it? It seems pretty cool, but I do not know if it would be a waste of 2 weeks and $2k, especially for a STEM student. Any info would be appreciated! Thanks!

Hey everyone, I'm attending the Columbia 3-week Immersion Summer Program for High School Students this summer. I decided to take the Introduction to Business, Finance, and Economics class (Session 2) and will be living there for 3 weeks. Is anybody else going this Summer, maybe we could get in touch beforehand? And if you have attended the Columbia Summer Program before, what are your thoughts about it? (I have heard some very negative things about the program in general but nothing so far on the business course) :)

Hi, does anybody have any information regarding the Rosetta Institute summer program for neuroscience? My child received an acceptance to the UC Berkeley program, However I do not see any prior student experiences of the program. Any inputs would be helpful. Thanks
