Low Cost Summer Programs on the West Coast

Hi! I am a junior in North Carolina. My family is planning to move to California, and I would like to apply to several summer programs in California but most of them are reserved for in state students. I have applied to several summer programs, but most of them are in NC or nearby. I also applied to PAYS or USC Bovard Scholars, but those required me to be a state resident or a counselor rec (my counselor is lazy, and only reply emails on Thursday. I would avoid any programs with a counselor rec) My family is poor, so we would love to find any cheap programs with no state residency requirement on the West Coast (preferably with no counselor rec).

Thank you for your help! I really need it now, and I will reply to all comments!!!!

Hi everyone! I'm trying to apply to the Iowa Young Writers Studio this year. Any advice/thoughts from past attendees of this program would be appreciated, as would students who are applying too.

I have a specific question: In the submittable page, it asks for academic and extracurricular interests. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to just list interests, or talk about them in a paragraph or something longer?

Sorry that this doesn't really involve college admissions but, has anyone done the New York Times Summer Academy? I'm very interested in doing it next summer and was looking for opinions on it or advice on applying.
Thanks:)

Hey y'all. NSLI-Y applications opened today, so I thought I'd take the liberty of opening the annual forum. This will be my second time applying, as I was rejected as a semi-finalist last year. Best of luck!

Hey, I might be wrong but I haven't seen a thread for YYGS 2020 yet so I'm making one here. I've barely started the essays though... how are everyone's apps going?

Hey, I didn't see a thread for the Kenyon program this year, so here it is. Post all your questions about applying, etc. here!

I have a few questions myself:
- On the application, there are two really vague fields to list "academic interests" and "extracurricular activities." What are the AOs expecting us to write here? Essays? Bulleted lists?
- When is the notification date for admissions results?
- Do they admit more based on transcript or writing sample?

Can anyone with previous program experience comment on the admissions process?

Is anybody familiar with this program ?

My DD is interested in the following Research Streams: Autonomous Robots and Robot Learning.

Do the students learn something meaningful?
Is it worth spending $2000 and 5 to 7 weeks in summer?

My son (sophomore) applied to couple of programs for summer 2020 - Quarterzero / Catapult Incubator, and Wharton LBW. He just got accepted to the Q0 Incubator but he is not sure how it stacks up to Wharton LBW. Any thoughts from others who have done Q0 recently or those that were accepted to both and selected one over another ?

Hi does anyone have experience in being admitted to this or has anyone applied to this for 2020? They are working on phase 2 I heard. Is this mostly only for NYC high schoolers or tristate area?

Iowa Young Writers' Studio 2019

Hey guys! I noticed that although applications are opening January 28, there doesn't seem to be a thread for this year yet. My twin and I were both accepted in the past, and I wanted to make sure everyone has a space to discuss the application and ask questions for 2019. We were both accepted to our dream schools for college (Columbia University for me, Haverford College for her), and believe that IYWS played a role in that, in addition to it simply being an absolutely incredible opportunity for high school students and writers in general.

Also, I was considering filming a video on the components of the IYWS application (portfolio, personal statement, etc.), and how I got accepted, ft. my twin, and discussing what it's like to actually go there. Would something like that be helpful to you guys?

I didn't see a forum like this for IYWS, which is a little weird considering applications are currently open, so, here I am making one. Anyone else applying this year?

Columbia Summer Immersion Program

Recently I was accepted into the Columbia Immersion Program, I will be taking Intro into Business, Finance, and Economics. Columbia is my dream school but when I checked the prices after seeing my application was accepted I was shocked. They are charging $11,000 for tuition. Now I really want to go and explore and see the school but is it even at this point worth it. My parents are well off so they could afford it but is it even worth it. Would appreciate any info.

Has anyone had interviews with Marissa Emanuel from Chuck Schumer’s office? If so, can you say anything about it such as advice or just general information?
I have one scheduled and I don’t know what to expect so I would really appreciate hearing anything someone has to offer.

Summer Research programs for CS

Hi guys, I'm currently a sophomore in high school and I'm trying to do find a research program to do over the summer.
I am really into CS and hope to research in that field.
How is the Pioneer Academic Research Program? What about the Horizon Academic Research program?

Does anyone have any other ideas about ways I can do research or any programs that you know of. I have found a bunch but most of them are for rising seniors and not juniors or are unnecessarily expensive and seem like a scam($7000+).

Not sure if this info is required for recommending programs but I have a 4.1 unweighted GPA and am taking a couple of AP classes. I did an internship at a start up after my freshmen year.

CTY summer camp Humanities and writing courses

I would like to send my younger son to CTY summer camp. My older one went one summer and I personally feel CTY is a good choice to kick off the sleepaway camp. I understand it's more about hanging out than actually learning. Nevertheless, with such high price, I still like my younger one to take a bit out from the course. My son absolutely hate the writing or any English class. I feel it's only fair he balances the fun nightlife at CTY and the daytime a bit. Anyone has taken CTY's humanities or writing courses? Any feedback? Only 4 choices available: Big Questions, Model United Nations and Advanced Geography, Writing and Imagination, and Heroes and Villains.

Hi everyone!

Is anyone else thinking (way too early) about whether they will get accepted to GS in 2020? :) I made it past the district level and an alum said I should be very proud! However, I fully expect to be rejected at the state level, so I am revealing my discipline only if I get accepted in March.

Nevertheless, applying was a great opportunity and I am already looking forward to hearing about the experiences of those accepted.

Congrats to everyone who's made it past their school district, and hope to hear from you here!

(Yes, you can use this thread to discuss roommates/campuses/etc in the spring even if I post my rejection.)
