COSMOS 2020 Thread

Hi guys!

From what i can see, at the moment there isn't a thread for COSMOS 2020 so I'm starting one.

Just some general questions I have
1. best campus (like scenery and just general niceness)
2. most and least competitive campus or clusters
3. other ppl who have gotten in stats or watever

i really want to do a bio cluster because I LOVE biology, but i heard those are REALLLY competitive

my stats
asian gorl (if that matters)
9th grade (which sucks because 9th graders don't really get in ;(

academics
-4.0 GPA hopefully
- taking APWH and AP Calc BC this year
- took 5 APs last year (Calc BC, Bio, Macro/Microecon, Psych)
- 2 800's on SAT Subject tests (Bio M and Math 2)

extracurriculars
- choir since grade 1 (but that probs don't really matter cuz its a STEM camp rip)
- science bowl since 6th grade, went to nats last year and got 6th out of 48 teams
- and thats basically it rip

( ^^^ not trying to flex bros. i don't want to be that one pretentious fool who has a huge ego :( but thats wat i sound like right now ik)

last year i applied but i didn't get in. probs cuz i realized cosmos was a thing like 2 weeks before the deadline but watever.

do you think i have a chance? i don't have that many sciency extracirriculars which sucks.
also which cluster/school should i apply.

(note - i realllllly want to go to COSMOS because freedom from parents and actualy hands on experience. also everyone says COSMOS is really fun and interesting)

Summer Programs for Rising Sophomores

Hello! I'm currently a freshman in high school and I'm looking at various summer programs I could attend.

Just FYI, I live in California and attend a top public high school. I'm pretty much set on doing something in the business/entrepreneurship/finance field, and I would also love to pursue law after my undergraduate years. My dream school is the University of Pennsylvania, specifically Wharton. In school, I participate in Speech & Debate, Mock Trial, DECA, and Investment Club. I also participate in molecular biology/environmental science research, so COSMOS is already in my radar and I'm planning to apply.

What summer programs should I apply to that I'm eligible for (in age)? Recommendations can range from business to debate to law, or really anything in between that will enhance my future application to universities, and most importantly, be a great experience.

Thank you all ahead of time!

Hi

I haven’t seen a thread for 2019 yet (sorry if there is!) so I’m starting one. How is everyone getting on with their essays? And is it worth it to go up to the word limit or is less okay?

Pioneer Research Program

On my hunt for research programs, I found the Pioneer Research Program. I thought that it sounded like an amazing opportunity and I was hoping to get more information about it. I read through the past threads about it on CC and I was just wondering:

If you get accepted into the program, how would you go about applying for scholarships? I'm concerned about the high tuition.

How competitive is it? Are there certain fields that are more competitive than others?

Are there deadlines for applications? I can't find any, but I might not be searching hard enough.

Any tips for the application? (especially the essay and the interview)

How rigorous is it?

I'm thinking about applying to the Spring-Summer session. Thoughts?

Thanks!

Kid was accepted. Has anyone done this program? It's relatively new. We're trying to explain it to the school guidance counselor. I'm wondering if the format includes completion of a paper by December, or if you attend the lectures through December and then write the paper afterwards. Also, it sounds like it's graded? There is not much description on line about the details. Anyone who participated last year, information would be greatly appreciated.

Did anyone here apply for Bronfman fellowship? Their website says the applicants who passed the first round would be notified mid-January, but my daughter hasn’t received anything. Wonder if it means she hasn’t been selected or the decisions simply haven’t been made/announced yet. Thanks!

Hi everyone! I haven't seen a LaunchX forum for the summer of 2020, so here you go! I'm a junior from LongIsland, NY and I think the program is SUPER cool and want to apply. Alas, I didn't apply in sophomore year, since I only heard about it over the summer of 2019. PLEASE HELP!

what opportunities for high school students interested in medicine?

Can you recommend some good summer programs for this? Can you also suggest any programs for the summer or school year that allow for real world experience? Someone mentioned becoming an EMT - is that possible in high school? And others say "shadow a doctor" - do you just ask doctors if you can do this or are there established programs for this? Bonus points for anything in Austin, San Antonio area but anywhere is great. Thanks!

Summer Research programs for CS

Hi guys, I'm currently a sophomore in high school and I'm trying to do find a research program to do over the summer.
I am really into CS and hope to research in that field.
How is the Pioneer Academic Research Program? What about the Horizon Academic Research program?

Does anyone have any other ideas about ways I can do research or any programs that you know of. I have found a bunch but most of them are for rising seniors and not juniors or are unnecessarily expensive and seem like a scam($7000+).

Not sure if this info is required for recommending programs but I have a 4.1 unweighted GPA and am taking a couple of AP classes. I did an internship at a start up after my freshmen year.

Bank of America Student Leaders Program

Hi, I've been trying to find out more information about this program for a while... If I'm not mistaken, it's a leadership focused summer program that connects students to internships, correct? Do you have to be a rising senior or college freshmen? Has anyone who's gone to this program comment on their experience? Is it that competitive; does it hold some kind of name recognition like Wharton's LBW program? Thanks.

Any of these programs/activities for a rising junior? I know of Wharton's LBW and Bank of America's programs; just wanted more information/choices. Thanks

Humanities Internships/Reaching Out to Professors

Hi everyone,

I've noticed that there are a lot of STEM internships for high schoolers but not a lot of humanities ones (history, for example). I'd love to do research for IR but I have not found an summer programs with universities, think tanks, etc. Would this be a time where students would have to cold-email professors to ask if they can tag along on their research projects or...? This, I assume, would be especially awkward for professors at schools in different cities that are maybe an 8 hour drive away.

Incoming 12th grade, mechanical engineering or robotics

I'm looking for a summer program for an incoming 12th grader who is interested in mechanical engineering and robotics. He's a hands on kind of guy, so a program that is mainly built around sitting in classes wouldn't be of interest. He is in year 2 of a highly competitive high school robotics team, so is really well versed in machinery and tools.

Many programs I see lump 9th and 12th graders together, or are so vague or beginner that I think they might not be a good match. I'd like something that is more geared towards older high schoolers. We're in California so staying on this side of the country would be ideal.

NC Governor's School Admissions

I have two questions: 1) Are any of the subjects more competitive than the others? I'm pretty open to most of the subjects (sounds fake but I actually am pretty interested in most things) and am wondering if applying for one would increase or decrease me chances. 2) what are they looking for? how does the admissions process work?

thanks to anyone who has any input, these are super specific questions!
