When to start looking for pre-med internships?

I am a freshman in pre-med and have been hearing a lot about internships and how important they are for getting into med school. Should I be looking for an internship now or wait a year or two? Also, I have heard that working as a medical scribe (through Scribe America) is good way to go, but I am concerned about how much time it will require during the school year. I would appreciate anyone's thoughts/ experience they can lend me. : )

Governor's School or JHU Internship

Hi, I'm a rising senior and I'm really struggling to make a decision on my summer plans and I was hoping someone could offer me their perspective. I was accepted into my state's governor's school which is very prestigious and only 15% of applicants get accepted. I had committed and was extremely happy to attend, but then I was contacted by an individual from the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab ASPIRE program that I had applied to early on, asking if I would be interested in interning there over the summer. The Gov. School would take 3 weeks while the internship would take 6 weeks and the internship would mean that I would be individually mentored by someone working in my prospective field on a project that would be used by the US government. I just don't know what to chose because in past years, people that have gotten into the Gov. school have gotten into Princeton, Yale, etc. and some people that take part in the internship get accepted into MIT but most go to UMD-CP which is also a great school for STEM. Also, I was also accepted into the MOSTEC program, an online program by MIT that I would be doing over the summer in conjunction with one of these programs. With governor's school, it's a very structured program with very minimal free time (except the weekends) and I'm just worried I might not be able to do both because MOSTEC requires 25 hours a week and I feel like I wouldn't have any fun while in the program. As for the internship, there's less of a time commitment during the day so doing MOSTEC with it would be more feasible, but I wouldn't have that collaborative and group experience living in dorms together experience that I would get at the Gov. school. I just feel like I would miss an incredible opportunity if I pass either of them up and I just don't know what to do. Please help!

Hey guys, so I'm planning on applying for this but I heard it's nearly impossible to get into with an acceptance rate harder than Harvard. I don't know if I have enough leadership experience and service hours to get in to this but I wanted to make a thread for everyone who's applying for 2018. What have you guys heard about the competition? Do you know if there will be interviews? I'm from the San Francisco bay area, has anyone heard anything about the competitiveness of the markets around here? Also, if anyone has tips on what they look for in the application (like is it the essays, the letter of recs, or service hours that matter the most), please do send advice!

Hello, I am from Northern CA in Junior in High school. I need some helps to decide what is the best summer program and strategy to accept the program by the order of acceptance. I certainly do not want to offend any admission officers and would like to increase my chance to enter top colleges. Please help me. I am interested in Mechanical engineering or Bioengineering, I like to build robotic VEX and in VEX Worlds three times. I am thinking to found a new VEX club next year and help the club to enter World. I am not sure whether I should consider Research, STEM, or Engineering/Business. Can I accept MT&SI on by due date Monday and later inform it not to go if RMP accepts me in early May? Will I offend UPenn MTSI admission officers? I am interested to enter UC Berkeley MET program. As of today close to end of Apr 2018, I am accepted by these 3 weeks M&TSI (due next Monday and pay $7000 including room meal excursion by May 7) and 4 weeks COSMOS (paid deposit, pay $3745 including room meal balance by May 25). https://fisher.wharton.upenn.edu/summer-mt https://cosmos-ucop.ucdavis.edu/app/main/page/dates-deadlines I am in wait-list in the 6 weeks UC Santa Barbara RMP (decision out early May, $10,000 including room meal excursion) and the 6.5 weeks GARCIA (early May, $2100 lab fee, pay extra room meal). http://www.summer.ucsb.edu/pre-college/research-mentorship-program/application-and-fees http://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/garcia/applying/HS instruction.html Your feedbacks are greatly appreciated.

Hello :) I've applied to FSU YSP for the summer of '18 and I was wondering if anyone has gotten any acceptances yet. Feel free to share stats, ECs, etc. The only test I put down was my PSAT score, a 1440. I have taken four AP tests: AP Stat (5), AP US Government (5), AP European History (4), and AP Language and Composition (4). I have a 4.0 GPA unweighted. I am heavily involved in Blessings in a Backpack. I raised $30,000 for Blessings to feed kids in my county. I am treasurer of Incite Club, which raises awareness of women's rights and fundraises for our local women's shelter. I have been playing piano for four years. I come from a very small suburban town, so I do not have prior research experience. However, I did express my profound love for Computer Science in my essay. Both of my teacher recommendations were probably very good, as I am very close with both of them. One was from my AP Calc AB teacher and the other was from my IB Chem teacher. I think my essay was pretty good, I spent a lot of time perfecting it. If anyone else would like to share their info please feel free! I hope if I get in that I get to meet you in person! :)

And does anyone know the acceptance rate is or how many people are expected to apply? And if this thread keeps going until october... what do you guys think of the application? It sounds like an amazing program and I really want to go but I'm scared of the application essays

Catapult Incubator - Should I go?

Hello, I am a Junior that had recently been accepted to the 2018 Quarter Zero Catapult Incubator. I applied for this program because I wanted to expand on my app idea and many other personal projects that I am working on. However, despite receiving over $3100 in financial aid, the program is still quite expensive, as we would have to pay over $3700. I am debating if the program is worth the cost. I understand that the program is prestigious, but I don't see how this would be more beneficial than me taking college classes over summer, working part-time, or working as an intern. I need to make the payment by this Friday (5/4). If you are an alumn or know someone that attended Catapult Incubator, I would like to know why the program is worth the cost and the time. Thank you.

What you can do if you don't get into or can't afford Yale Young Global Scholars

Hey everyone, After reading all your messages about not getting into YYGS cos of how competitive/expensive it is, it reminded me so much about the way I was feeling this time 2 years ago! I was also on the waiting list to get in and eventually I had to decline my offer cos it was just too much money for my parents and I wasn't offered a scholarship. So I thought I would write this to let you all know that it's really not the end of the world and there are alternatives! So it is true that the name Yale comes with a lot of prestige but in the end I'm not sure that the stress of being put on a perpetual waiting list or emptying your parents life savings is really worth it. when I realized I couldn't do YYGS, I was pretty upset. I thought that I was too late to get a place on other good summer programs but my parents nagged me to keep looking so I did. Then I found this youth leadership program called Global Scholar and saw they were still accepting applications through spring. It had a curriculum that I was really interested in, mainly international affairs and social justice so I jumped at the chance! I got accepted fairly soonish after and before I knew it I was on my way to DC for two weeks in July! While I was there I got to meet with experts in the field of international affairs/development like ambassadors, politicians, policymakers, researchers, humanitarian aid workers etc etc. I also got to meet some executive directors of organizations I really wanted to intern for which was great for networking (I got some useful business cards and offers of mentorship!), I also chatted to a few heads of faculty for colleges I wanted to apply for in DC. A massive plus was attending different panels and seminars at DC-based HQs like United Nations Foundation, World Bank, Save the Children etc. and I learnt skills that helped me launch a campaign in my school (this is the kind of hands-on experience that employers and admissions officers are looking for!!). for example, have you ever been to an interview where they asked you to "talk about a time when you did xyz"... and you've got nothing lool. Global Scholar simulated those experiences so that I had my go-tos ready for when the interviewer asked about a time I was a great leader or worked through a difficult situation in your team or whatever. There's even mentorship from the program trainers with career development and I got to be on their advisory board which looked great on my resume. not to mention all the fun activities we did like visiting the White House, national monuments, Capitol Hill and loads more. I made super good friends that I still talk to today and basically I'm just really happy that I went to Global Scholar! It saved my summer! The price was much better... it was waaay less than half the amount for YYGS if I remember correctly and they had scholarships and payment plans available too. It was super affordable for my parent's budget and I don't think I lost anything in value for a summer program in youth leadership. You can still be ambitious and not spend thousands - I definitely think my experience at Global Scholar my resume. Check them out for yourself at globalscholar.org Obviously I'm a bit biased cos I attended but only because it was an amazing experience and I don't want others feel down like I did thinking that there is nothing else out there. I'm happy to chat to whoever wants to know more but their staff are super friendly and probably know more than I do about the program info. Good luck to you all out there and don't let rejection, finances or a waiting list get you down - backup programs are a good way to guarantee your summer and I think Global Scholar is a really great choice.
