Love how this is an opportunity open to students from Canada as well. Unfortunately, was rejected last year, but am giving the application process another try. Anyone else in the same boat and/or considering this "summer program"? Advice would be much appreciated!

BUSTI vs Carnegie Mellon Acting 2018

Today's our lucky day - just had word that our son, who will be a senior next year was accepted to BUSTI & Carnegie Mellon's Acting program. I was a Cherub at Northwestern in the early 80s, and it's stirred up so many fond memories. I'd love to hear personal experience with these two summer programs - pros and cons. They both sound great. I looked at videos of some of the devised performances BUSTI students have created - these are not my son's bag - he has participated in similar things and seen plenty of others. It sounds as though there is a bit of a leg up for undergrad admissions for hardworking BUSTI seniors. On the other hand - Carnegie Mellon's audition focus sounds fantastic for undergrad admissions to every BFA program EXCEPT Carnegie Mellon! (And, uh, Julliard - the brass ring!) To complicate things, my son's education has been non-traditional for the most part and while this path has led to exceptionalism in some subjects (and a love of the Socratic method), I'm nervous about ACT and SAT scores, and transcripts. I wound up going to Northwestern after my Cherub summer, and I've always thought that I benefited from my participation. (I have a BA, not a BFA, which is what my son wants)

Hello all, I'm applying to the Iowa Young Writers' Studio this year, and I have a quick question about the creative writing sample that must be included in the application. Prior attendees, how did you structure your writing sample? Did you include your name and information on the first page (did you have to have a cover page)? I don't think you need a cover page or any formal introduction to your writing samples, but I'm asking just to be sure. Any additional information would be great!

The application for the 2018 Princeton Summer Journalism Program (August 3-13) is now open. This is a highly selective, all-expenses-paid, 10 day program for low-income students. The application is here: https://fs4.formsite.com/pusjp/form1/secure_index.html and feel free to ask questions below. Only students who are currently juniors in high school may apply. There are no exceptions to this rule. The program's website is here: https://www.Princeton.edu/sjp What is the Princeton University Summer Journalism Program? We welcome about 35-40 high school students from low-income backgrounds every summer to Princeton's campus for an intensive, 10-day seminar on journalism. The program's goal is to diversify college and professional newsrooms by encouraging outstanding students from low-income backgrounds to pursue careers in journalism. All expenses, including students' travel costs to and from Princeton, are paid for by the program. Students who attend the program come from across the country. What is the program like? Classes at the program are taught by reporters and editors from The New York Times, The Washington Post, Newsweek, The New Republic, The New Yorker, CNN and ABC News, among other media outlets. Students tour the Times, Newsweek, and CNN; cover a professional sports event; cover news events in the Princeton area; film and produce a TV segment; conduct an investigative project; author a group blog; and report, write, edit and design their own newspaper, The Princeton Summer Journal, which is published on the program's last day. The program is also designed to give students a taste of what life is like at one of the best colleges in the country—students live on campus and eat in one of the university's cafeterias—and to prepare them to apply to top schools. Students meet with Princeton's top professors as well as the school's president and its dean of admissions. Students attend seminars on every aspect of the college admissions process. They also take a practice SAT and attend an SAT class taught by Princeton Review. The program's 2017 schedule can be found on the website. After students return home, program staff remain in contact with them, assisting them during the college application process and helping them to apply for journalism internships once they are in college. The first part of the application process can be completed here: https://fs4.formsite.com/pusjp/form1/secure_index.html. Those who move on will be interviewed by the program directors— either in person or over the phone—, and will be asked to provide printed copies of the following items via U.S. mail: an official transcript; the first page of the income-tax return form (the 1040 or 1040EZ form) of their custodial parent(s)/guardian(s), or a signed statement by their parent(s)/guardian(s) saying that their income is below the level at which they would be required to file income tax returns; a recommendation letter from a teacher; and clips from their high school newspaper or other publication (optional). To be eligible for the program, students must meet the following qualifications: - They must currently be juniors in high school. - They must live in the United States (continental U.S. not required). - They must have at least an unweighted 3.5 grade point average (out of 4.0). - They must have an interest in journalism. - This program is for low-income students. The combined income of their custodial parent(s)/guardian(s) plus child support payments, if any, should not exceed $45,000. If the combined income exceeds this cutoff, the student may attach a letter explaining why his or her family qualifies as financially under-resourced. Undocumented and DACAmented students are welcome to apply.

Has anyone else applied for VSA Session III 2018, has a child who applied, attended in the past, or knows someone who attended in the past? About me: I applied during the "priority window" on February 1st this year with a 1330 PSAT. I will be a rising senior this summer and really hope that I get in. I'm really hoping to communicate with people that have also applied for the same session.

My D got into both Texas State new SMT camp Nexus and TPAP. She went to TPAP last summer and lived it. Said it was life changing. Thought maybe we would try something new this summer but know very little about the Nexus camp. Anyone have an opinion on which is better and why or can tell me a bit about Nexus.

I just received my letter of acceptance to the Henry Clay Student Congress. It seems like a good opportunity, but last summer I attended the Texas Governor’s School and was completely disappointed. Has anyone attended the Student Congress recently, or been accepted this year? Do y’all have any advice or stories?

Texas Governor’s School Experience

I attended Texas Governor’s school at Lamar University over the summer of 2017. It was a free, three week program taught by univesity professors and college students. Overall, I would rate the camp 5/10. Academics: 3/10. Overall, the courses offered were not rigorous at all. I took International Relations, Psycology of a Serial Killer, Art and Sculting, and Drama. The International Relations and Psycology of a Serial Killer courses were both taught by a middle school history teacher. He was very enthusiastic about the subjects, but all the information taught was easily accessible by a quick google search. Art and Sculpting was taught by a local artist. The class was fun and challenging. Drama was taught by a college student, who was also a house leader. It was fun but not structured nor informative. The classes were fun, but not high caliber. Student Life: 7/10. The food was good, and accessible three times a day. The sleeping accommodations were good. Each person had their own room, with two people sharing a lobby with a mini fridge, shelf space and a microwave. Each floor of the dorms had one girl house and one boy house, along with two supervisors. However, although sleepovers weren’t permitted, there was no room checks or supervision. It was pretty much a free for all. i I would recommend it if you’re looking for : laid back atmosphere, diversity, socialization, economic programs I would NOT recommend it if you’re looking for : rigorous academics, college credit. Hope this helps.

Hope you are are having a great spring break. I was looking into doing something business related over the summer so that it would look good on my college resume. I was wondering if you know of any internships/summer programs/ or other things that I could do that would better my resume. For example, I know that there are internships available at the local senators office; and was wondering if there are any other internships that I could do.

My son was accepted into Penn State summer intensive and Triple Arts at Western Carolina. Does anyone have info on which program is better, or experience in either. They both seem conservatory style, and are reputable.
