HELP! Study Abroad vs. Internship?

$

Hello, I am going to be a senior next year and was recently accepted to a study abroad summer program in Spain. It would take up most of my summer, so I would not have the opportunity to do anything else. My other option would be not to go, and to find things to do in my hometown. I live in a college town, so I could intern with a lab/professor, get a job, etc. I am really struggling because I am thinking about applying to some pretty selective schools. While I know neither of these things would "make or break" my application, which would would overall make a better impression? To give some background, my resume definitely has some language focuses, so I suppose that the study abroad program would build on that. However, I am uncertain that I want to use my summer on that program. I would really appreciate any help (esp. from personal knowledge/experience)!

Interlochen Intermediate Program - Piano or Music for 3 weeks

Hello - I am a recently joined member of the CC community but have been lurking here for a while. My dd got into the Interlochen program for both piano and music for 3 weeks. She is in 6th grade and has received a modest merit scholarship for both also.We dont have friends and family that have been to Interlochen nor do we know alumni. Also, she has absolutely no interest in being a concert pianist but eventually would like to transition to jazz. What should we be asking/looking at before we make a decision? What should she pick?

Interlochen summer camp musical theater production

Hi! I'm a high school junior who applied to Interlochen summer camp musical theater production (6 weeks). I submited my audition tapes and resume two weeks ago and I'm super nervous about whether I'll get accepted. 1. If there's anyone who attended this camp, do you know when the admission results come out? 2. How selective is this camp? 3. Is this camp recognized by top colleges? I am a vigorous academic student(SAT 1570) who wants to major in theater (I have not precisely chosen my field yet. I'm mostly interested in musical theater acting and production management.).Currently, I'm considering Yale, Vassar, and etc. Do you think this camp will help show my artistic abilities to the college admission officers? 4. Lastly, how is interlochen summer camp musical theater production?! Please share your experience!! Thank you all:-)

Has anyone taken this program for the summer? It does not look that hard to get in; even though the program is full for 2018. The web says "academic programming between 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. during the weekdays, which will include lectures, guest speakers, hands-on activities, group discussions, and off-site visits." I am wondering if actual Georgetown faculty teaches any sessions - what are the hand-on activities for example, what are the off-site visits. If someone has attended this before; it would be great if you could give us your opinion Thanks in advance

I’ve written about this program before. You can use the search button to find old threads. Thirteen alumni from the program are freshman at Stanford this year. This doesn’t mean that you’ll get accepted to Stanford but it does suggest that you can do some meaningful research if you work hard and are able to get a good mentor.

Carnegie Mellon AP/EV vs. Artificial Intelligence

hey, i am applying to Carnegie Mellon's summer program for high school students( i'm a rising senior). I'm as interested in the AP/EV program as i am in the artificial intelligence program. since I can't decide which program is better for me, I'm trying to base my final decision on the basis of the acceptance rates of the two programs. Which one of the two programs has a higher acceptance rate? For example, I have heard the SAMS program is by far the most competitive summer program at the school. aside from my question of which one has a higher acceptance rate, how do the acceptance rates of the two programs( AP/EV and Artificial intelligence) differ?

My son was accepted into Penn State summer intensive and Triple Arts at Western Carolina. Does anyone have info on which program is better, or experience in either. They both seem conservatory style, and are reputable.

I was just looking around for some info on the √mathroots program at MIT over the summer and realized nobody had posted anything about it for this year. What I've found so far: -Only 20 people were accepted in 2015 (haven't found anything more recent) -They send decisions around the middle of April I really haven't found much else, and if anyone comes across anything else, please leave a post (and if people from previous years can comment on the number of applicants and number of people accepted, that would be much appreciated). I would love to hear from others that have applied. Best of luck!

Harvard Summer School

Hi guys, I know everyone does college summer programs for college credit cause they think it will look better for their transcript but at the same time basically everyone gets in and is super expensive. In no way do I want to go to Harvard, I just want to take the Greek course there. I also got in touch with a few professors around Boston who are going to meet me to discuss classics and stuff like that. Do you think the Harvard summer school is worth it?? If I got an A in the course (and it counts for 8 credits) would that look good since I'm applying for classical studies? thanks!

Hi all, Junior here. I applied to RSI and I'm planning on applying to the BU Rise program as well. Seems like every year or two someone gets a publication (internship) and there are about 3-5 Siemens semifinalists as well. Just curious, are there any other prestigious programs like such that have publications and/or submissions to national competitions such as Siemens and ISEF? I'm planning on applying so just discuss any stats, concerns, etc!

Hi, I'm looking to do COSMOS in 2018, application opens on 1/4/18. I've never done this sort of application, so should I gather my rec letter and transcript before school ends this Friday, or wait until after break? I heard somewhere that the earlier you apply, the better chances you have... Also, what are my chances of getting in with 3.8 GPA weighted?

AMA: LaunchX (MIT Launch) '17 alum

It's that time of year again... Summer program applications are open! MIT Launch '17 alum here. If you have any questions on application process / life at Launch / curriculum / company continuing, let me know and I will try my best to answer. A few things about admission: - they don't really care about your transcript - as long as you don't have bunch of Cs you should be fine. - the video matters a lot - they have alum application readers summarize applications and make recommendations - having a LaunchX club or being in the LaunchX regional leadership can be a huge boost - applied previous years (and rejected) can be a boost - from underrepresented countries can be a boost *those are just my observations - totally unofficial. Why apply to Launch: - the program is highly hands on. You form REAL REAL REAL company with your team and make lifelong friends. - most companies formed at Launch continues after the conclusion of the program. I've heard of companies from two years ago still running and making enough money to be self-sufficient. - every single lecture (maybe except the first three days) is designed to support your company growth. the lecturer (sometime guest speakers) are highly knowledgeable in their respective field and usually will stay 10 minutes after lecture to answer individual questions. You learn everything from primary market research (PMR) to professional marketing. You even get legal consulting! - walking distance to venture cafe - meet the entrepreneurs from all around boston there! - great working environment. who doesn't love to work in a conference room with view to Charles River. - Launch reimburse some of your prototyping costs. - You get a lot of exercise during lunch - walking from seniors house to sloan is no joke (go look it up on google maps) Do not apply to Launch if you are trying to: - get a golden ticket to MIT. While Launch team has a good relationship with MIT Admissions, they are definitely not a golden ticket. - just to fill your time. you simply won't get in if you aren't passionate. - make money. if you are just here to make money, you probably won't succeed in your company, therefore, losing all your money spent on camp cost. Again if you have any questions about Launch, just let me know. Good luck on your applications everyone!
